Academy Transfers ACES to the Academy Software Foundation

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), the global standard for color management in film and television, will move to the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) to boost its open and collaborative development.

Used in films such as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Wicked”, ACES ensures color consistency throughout all stages of production. Its 2.0 release introduces improvements in color rendering, consistency across different dynamic ranges, and expanded support for more devices.

The ASWF will provide infrastructure and open governance, encouraging global contributions and integration with other key open-source projects. The transition will be officially presented on August 10–11 during Open Source Days in Vancouver and online.
