Metro will officially unveil the highly anticipated LAX/Metro Transit Center Station on June 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the grand opening of a transformative infrastructure project that is set to revolutionize travel in Los Angeles, California.

The new station, located at 9600 Portal Avenue, is designed to provide seamless access between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and a vast network of transit options throughout Los Angeles County.

Beginning at 5 p.m., Angelenos and visitors will be able to easily connect with Metro’s C and K Lines, six Metro bus lines, and eight partner bus lines, including Beach Cities Transit, Big Blue Bus, Culver City Bus, GTrans, Torrance Transit, and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) shuttles to LAX terminals.

Metro officials emphasize the station’s long-term impact on local mobility, especially as Los Angeles prepares to host global events including the 2026 NBA All-Star Game, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The LAX/Metro Transit Center is the eighth completed project under Metro’s ambitious “Twenty-Eight by ’28” initiative, aimed at modernizing the region’s transit infrastructure ahead of the Olympic Games.

To celebrate the opening, Metro is offering free rides across its entire transit network starting Friday, June 6 at 4 a.m., through Monday, June 9 at 3 a.m. Additionally, Metro Bike Share is providing free 30-minute rides with promo code 060625.

The event will feature speeches by key public officials and transportation leaders, including Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, California Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, and Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins. Olympic and Paralympic athletes Anita Alvarez and Jamal Hill will also be present, symbolizing the city’s forward-looking spirit.

Metro Ridership Up by 9.4% in 2024, Surpassing 25.8 Million Boardings

Metro reported a significant 9.4% increase in ridership in 2024, reaching a total of 25,880,698 boardings across its transit system.

This marks a notable rise from approximately 23.6 million boardings in 2023, reflecting continued recovery in public transportation use following pandemic-era declines. The growth highlights the impact of recent service improvements and regional initiatives aimed at encouraging more residents to choose public transit.
